Hi there! Last Tuesday, I was searching information for a homework assignment, and I curiously find some comics, books and movies about surfing so I think that it will be a good idea to share with you what I had found. It was totally a coincidence but I really like it and find it interesting because is a way to have fun and learn about surf ! The world of comic books has many fascinating avenues of exploration, besides who don’t like comics?
Actually I found them in a page called surfrods.com and surfdudes.com, there I found some of the most important surf comics in the actuality like: Silver Surfer a Marvel Comics superhero created by Jack Kirby, this character was primarily in the Fantastic Four, it actually has its own webpage were you can read 185 Silver Surfer comics right from your computer, in the next link: http://marvelite.prohosting.com/surfer/ or you can also see videos about it in youtube. Another comic I found interesting in the website was the one of Sattes Astroboys – wave warriors it is about a new concept in Junior Surf life saving competition, besides it was published long time ago like in January 1987 it is still at sale in book stores and it has a very high and good critic, I really haven´t never read about it but it sounds really interesting to do so.
And for the ones that prefer to see movies (like me:P) I also find out that over the years, Hollywood has made some attempts at bringing the sport of surfing to the big screen, the first movie to really capture the fact that surfing was more than just a sport was called: The Endless Summer it was a new lifestyle – in where the people was just as concerned with riding waves as the experience of searching for them, another one is The Story of Australian Surfing, Under The Sun and many others that you can find them in http://www.surfertoday.com/surf-movies in there it will appear a list that contains the most complete surf movie collection ever made it is really a good site!
So, what did you think about comics? Do you like it? You will be interested in reading a comic about surf? or did you already read it? I will like to see your opinion about it! Hope you like the links that I posted :) see you !
Hi Hilda!
ResponderEliminarWell, I have not read any of these comics before and I did not even know they existed, however I do know that Hollywood has tried to portrait the experience and passion that surfers have for this sport.
I have actually seen some movies where the main character is a surfer and also I have seen the movie of the Fantastic Four where, as you mentioned, Silver Surfer appears. It was funny to read this and get the idea that he really is a surfer, I had not made that connection before. I guess the idea that he is a surfer is interesting because, he is a different kind of surfer, instead of "surfing the waves" he surfs the wind (?) Yeah I guess you could say that.
Anyways, I consider it is great that surfing has acquired more popularity than before in terms of comics and movies and I actually hope to learn this sport sometime soon. In the meanwhile, I guess I should begin observing how does it work through movies and these comics and also, I don't know if you have seen it or not, but on Discovery Channel and NatGeo there are some programs dedicated to surfing alone. There are also some TV series in Boomerang and other kid's channels that talk about this sport.
It was nice reading your post and I am looking forward into knowing more about surfing and I will read the links you posted to see the comics. Keep up the good work! ;) See you!
Hi there :D!
ResponderEliminarWell this post is surely interesting, I didn’t realized Silver Surfer to be included in the sport but now that I come to think about it it’s pretty obvious coming from the name.
I have to thank you for the link, I may now sit someday to read it, also the idea of using a Surfer in a comic is pretty good, mainly original so I believe this is why it is popular among the comic fans, even though I don’t read too much, I got pretty interested on this mainly because I see surfing as an extreme sport and well I would like to know what it would feel to surf, but I don’t have the ability nor the dexterity.
As an answer to your questions I would say I do like comic books they are really interesting to read and launches your imagination to the limit and well I haven’t read the Silver Surfer comic but I’m pretty sure it is awesome, maybe someday I’ll take the time to read and enjoy it. Also a comic about surfing is so tempting to read because there are not so much about that, I mean, an extreme sport made into a comic seems pretty cool.
I have to congratulate you for this research; it was helpful and contained the link sources of the comic books so everyone that sees it can read them! Awesome article and I’m looking forward to the next one you manage to publish for us :D!
