Surf Contests

Hi guys this week I am going to talk about the Surf Contests, like I already said in older posts, surf is practiced regionally and internationally by many countries of the world like: Europe, México, USA, Australia, Brazil etc. Some of the most famous places in the surf world are: The Arugman Bay, a small fishing village recently known to some die hard surfers by the consistent swell, long runs, shark free, the average wave height is about  3–4 Meters and the Mavericks — "The Wave Beyond" — in California which inspires hardcore athletes to face the power of Mother Nature, and stirs the souls of all those who aspire to challenge their own limits and achieve the extraordinary surf Ventures, in this places surfing goes on all year long and although in the summer months are the largest crowds to watch the events, the surfing is often better during the winter months (Sep - March).  From San Diego's surfing beaches such as  Santa Cruz's Steamer Lane, you'll find the surfing is great and the top surfers from around the globe come to California to try it out. Among the styles and surfers, there are many types of boards, types of competitions and specialized categories.  It's fun to watch the action but I think it will be even better to participate and if it is your first time it exist some competitions that are open to novice surfers and beginners. Pictured in the surfing photo above is the largest surfing event in California known as The US Open of Surfing and Beach Games which by the years had grown from a surfing event to a festival with booths, vendors, concerts and extreme sports competitions.

In a surf competition the contestants get into randomly chosen heats, each heat goes out and each person is marked for each of their waves out of ten, ten being the perfect grade, once the competitor is standing up it starts to be counted as a wave who executes the most radical maneuvers generating power and speed through the biggest and best wave for the longest distance will receive the highest score, at the end of the session, the best 3 waves get added up and they put you in 1st 2nd 3rd etc. if you come 1st/2nd you go through to the next round with the other finalists and it carries on in the same way until their is only one winner.

Inside the surf competitions exist some penalities that are:

·         If a judge thinks an interference has taken place, the judge shall triangle the
ride of the offending competitor and draw an arrow to the ride of the competitor
who was interfered with.  In the case of a paddling interference, the triangle shall be placed on the line between the appropriate rides for the offending competitor and filled with P. I. (no ride/no score) and the arrow still drawn. P.I. will receive at least a 2.5 deduction from their total score.

·         If any four of six judges, including the head judge, or 3 of 5 scoring judge rule interference, the tabulators shall give the offending competitor a score of 50% for the ride on each of the judge’s sheets and that score will count as one of the rides tabulated for the offending competitor. It is the responsibility of each competitor to keep track of their wave count.Officials, judges, and other administrators are discouraged from assisting competitors, coaches, friends, or any others in keeping track of individual’s wave counts.

Announce interference calls immediately.

a.  All attempts should be made to consistently inform surfer upon majority decision of interference calls.

b.  Head judge informs Competition/Contest Director, then notifies announcer of decision.  Head judge may notifyannouncer directly if Competition or Contest Director is not readily available.

c.  Announcer Verbiage: “Blue interference on White.

I believe that surf is a hard sport and you have to dedicate a lot of time on it but In fact there are very few penalities in surf competitions I don´t think that this penalities mentioned previously are so difficult to achieve and to follow them, after the information given in this blog what did you think about giving it a try??  :)

Surf Art

Hi! This week I will talk about how surf is represented in art. In reality I had never thought about it but it is really interesting and impressive how surf is used in different artistic styles like in paintings photography’s, comics, music, movies among others. During the years many artists had take advantage of the surf sport to go to the beach, to relax, see the waves as a point of meditation and this help to rearrange their ideas and became by some way more inspired on their works we can find many artist that had created surf works, but first of all why we don’t start by the definition about what is the Surf Art, well for this definition we could find many different opinions about it but in reality everyone’s opinion have a common path that is to show primarily the lifestyle of the surfers one of the artist  that defined this concept was Ron Croci which tells us that the Surf art is a contemporary evolution in the long history of the marine painting, RonCroci,Surf  Artist(http://www.clubofthewaves.com/surf-artist/ron-croci.php)like him we can find many different ideas from artist like Howark kirk, Maria Brophy, John O´Brien Peter, Pierce Jesse Miller, and many  others what is incredible from this artist is that all of them had surf at least one time in their  life I mean they had lived the experience of surfing and in a way they want to demonstrate to the world their love to the ocean, how did they feel  and from my point of view they make their paintings more realistic and interesting because it is something that they actually lived this type of art started approximately in 1970, actually this was the year in where Ron Croci starts painting, his style is primarily surrealistic and his paintings and prints depict shows joyful scenes of women in water sports, ocean, landscapes some examples of his paintings are like:

What did you think about them? In my personal thoughts I believe that they are very beautiful that they contain very beautiful colors and a strong feelings like of calm purity and that is not all there are many paintings like this with many different artist in the next link: http://www.clubofthewaves.com/surf-artist/ . I will like to finish this blog talking you about the surf music that it has a similarity with the paintings because it also talks us about the feelings of the surfers and its spiritual affairs.
The Surf Music started mainly in the 1960´s, it could be designed as very instrumental, but in fact this had changed over the years, surf music grew in popularity, as did surfing as a sport and as a lifestyle one of the most famous musician connected with surf music that I think everybody knows about it is Elvis Presley, although his musical style was not surf music as such, his stay at the time in Hawaii was linked in with the surf culture scene many of his fans in Hawaii would have been surfer one of the songs that he composed was Aloha Oe, although  I really invite you to navegate inside this webpage posted at the end there you can find more information about the music even comics and movies that I think it really worth to do so in fact I get all the information from there I will really like to hear your comments about it! see you next week :)
